type='text'>we should continue to pray for the sick regardless its efficacy

the human consciousness includes a conscience that grows out of the fact that our preferred social structure (i.e. civilization) depends on humans acting, well, civil to one another. our survival instincts tell us that those who do harm to other individuals or to society as a whole, are doing harm to us, and we ascribe the labels good and bad to civil and uncivil behavior.

religion grows out of the fact that non-human things like plants, animals and natural phenomenon don't seem to share our desire to protect humans. to wit, bears don't mind eating people, and even though tornados do seem to target trailer parks, in general, nature is deaf to the pleas of humanity.

our pea brains have to come up with an explanation for why corn won't grow when you want it to.

enter god.

throughout human history we have prayed for rain, prayed for the rain to stop, etc. and whether or not it works, we still do it, because it gives us a sense of control over a world that is not so infatuated with humans as we are.

since nature doesn't care about us, and at times seems out to get us, and since there are humans that seem to act more like animals than humans, having a god that is more powerful than nature and humanity is very comforting indeed.

that being said, praying for some to be healed never hurt anyone, and it does make people feel good, so why would you discourage it?

that's just godless. hahahahahahahaha!

my thought:
every conservative i have ever spoken with at some point explains to me that the constitution is not a living document; that it is to be interpreted precisely in its words; and that judges who set precedents that conservatives don't like are 'activist judges'

odd, then that conservatives can so casually overlook this egregious disregard of the cornerstone of the republic.

my, how quickly the conservative congressmen and women roll over and play dead for the president, abdicating their role within our government, forever eroding the importance of elected representation of the american citizenry.

this behavior is both cynical and shameful, and if you don't feel like you've been slapped in the face, then you really need to re-read the constitution, and re-evaluate what it means to be an american.

if bill clinton had pulled this stunt, every conservative in amerca would be in the streets with pitchforks and torches, and to believe otherwise is flagrant equivocation.
digital rights management schema

your past successes in the marketplace in no way entitle you to success in the future. success in business can only be ensured by providing a product that people want and offering it at a fair price and digital rights management (drm) appears at first glance to be an innocuous means of ensuring that producers receive payment for their wares.

DRM itself is not evil. What is evil are media companies pushing legislation like the broadcast flag and watermarking as law. And that's not really even evil, as it is clearly their right. I just see three huge problems with it.

1.) these companies don't really pay the artists much so their overtures seem most disingenuous. in reality artists make their money mainly off merchandise and concerts. the labels keep the vast majortiy of all album sales

2.) these DRM regimes being pushed in legislatures worldwide squash the concept of "fair use" -- to wit: when i buy a CD i can make back up copies, put it on to my ipod, etc, serve them up from a central server in my house, etc. Many of the DRM regimes in the pipeline would make it illegal for me not to pay to listen to my music in each way i want to listen to my music

3.) DRM shemes developed in the free market like apple's itunes, windows media center, etc. that give consumers freedom to enjoy the music they paid for, will be accepted. Super-restrictive, expensive regimes forced onto consumers by law will always be circumvented -- in short the WIPO, RIAA, MPAA etc are setting themselves up for failure, even with their ability to distort the free market through legislation.

The main thrust of DRM is a last ditch effort on the part of huge media companies to remain relevant. Smaller labels and artists themselves are proving that smaller channels of distribution work very well without them -- for an analog look at the splintering of the cable television space.

If these special interest groups and the media companies who fund them had paid attention long ago, they could have avoided the predicament in which they find themselves now by participating in the new media revolution. But just like the airline industry, these crusty, old-school behomeths go running for corporate welfare from uncle sam.

<span This is the first episode with my new Alesis Multimixer 8 USB mixing board, and it is suh-weeet!!!!

Today I have prepared a Supersized pop, punk, ska and dub stylee explosion. I even kept quiet for the most part. Also using Ots Audio turntables Silver version. this leads to perfectly legal acts that not all people like, like clearcutting forests, etc. (we liberals like hardwood floors too ya know!)
but anyway, here is an example of how one network provider could forever wreck one of the most important underpinnings of the world wide web :: network neutrality

the value of the internet as computing resource is very tightly bound to the concept that any node should be able to reach any other node without restriction.

some internet provider want to charge companies whose traffic crosses their network (example i use comcast, and i want to access web site XYZ.COM that resides on an at&t server, but the traffic between me and the web site spends time crossing over a bellsouth network -- bellsouth says it wants
it's perfectly legal, too

i'll be the first to point out that the telco's do pay to keep up the network, and that they should be able to charge whatever they want and operate however they want.
the fact that the internet is the most important technology in our nation's economy and that fucking it up could cause a major disruption to our nation as a whole does not enter into the equation.
outlawing this behavior might be the first step in turning the nations telecom infrastructure back into a quasi-utility, and that would be very very bad.
what do you think?
i think that instead of outlawing it, they should be forced to open their networks to competition.
right now i can only get comcast cable. if they want to be allowed to slow my access to web sites that they don't get paid to host, then i should be allowed to get time warner cable or something else. otherwise they have me over a barrel.

what do you think?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20060119/tc_pcworld/124403
I think that this is silly and here’s why:

Most people’s “secret recipe” is usually just a variation on a trick found in a publicly available book or web tutorial; relatively few people are actually pioneering uses of off-the-shelf technology.

Pioneering use of off-the-shelf technology is scarcely ground-breaking compared with the R&D that went into making your clever trick possible in the first place.

Things like javascript and dhtml represent a small problem domain and even the most clever of tricks produces trivial results (rollovers and pop ups and resizing yaaaaaay!)

Not discussing technique with other people narrows your focus to only those problems you encounter yourself and you limit your ability to see how your ideas might work in other environments

I find that whenever I share my knowledge with others by helping them solve a problem or discussing a clever trick I’ve uncovered, or even invented, that I am rewarded in the following ways:

I gain the respect of my peers for having a deep knowledge of the technology; their professional references include phrases like “he really knows his stuff”

I gain the gratitude of my peers for having helped them. That comes in handy when you need their expertise!

I gain from a deeper understanding of what I’m talking about by fielding unexpected questions, and translating concepts into another person’s contextual reference. You teach yourself when teach others.

Also, the fact that you know a particular thing well enough to explain it to someone should show you that you’ve already got a head start on whomever you’re showing and they can become a resource for you when you have moved on to the next thing.

I think people who guard their techniques have this crazy idea that you can be a one-trick pony in this world. Those days over, baby! I’ve lived through the desktop publishing upheaval and the web boom and bust, what I’ve learned is that if you don’t feel like you’re drinking from a fire hose, you’ve gotten lazy and are going to be passed by.

GJ-019 Show Notes

DUB EXPLOSION!!!!!!!!

I finally got a new episode out the freakin' door!!! I've been so swamped working on the nursery and working at work, that I have fallen behind. My apologies! This episode has some seriously phat tracks. I really enjoyed myself making this. I was laying in bed and couldn't sleep. It was nagging at me "Ken, make a new podcast!" So I nuked some java, fired up the studio and I was off to the races! I hope you dig it. Download here

03:00 Stay Clear / THESSS link
06:20 Wicked Rebel / Slightly Stoopid
10:00 Rise Up / Scaterd Few link
14:38 Right The Alarm / Stick Figure link
17:30 8400 Molotov (HORSEMAN STEPPERS) / 12m3 Sound System link
21:12 Mr. Businessman / Babylon Cowboys link
26:05 Chat :: Worked at home today
28:10 Toad's Mystic Talk Dub / KoCha link
31:39 Station Identification
32:15 Chat :: Good friends Power Steppers, I sound like over night DJ, Behind in queuing up music, listening BBC
35:12 Elka Rockers in Dub / Prince Fatty link
39:00 Know Your Dub / Power Steppers link
43:20 Into Twilight / Burning Babylon link
47:00 Chat, Polar Bear Cook Out, Sign Off

Monday Nov 28, 2005

Welcome back to the world.
I couldn't sleep because of all the coffee I drank while working on the nursery. type='text'>1st real podcast up and running

got the first episode of the podcast up, online and on the air. the full podcast has an odd echo on some of the vocals, but i decided if i waited to re-record or even re-mix it, i'd run the risk of not ever getting this thing started, so i ran with it.

i'm still having problems with the microphone i bought -- i've never really used a mic to do real recording on windows. i used to use my mac waaaaay back in the day (sys 7.x) and made custom audio cds (had clear off nearly everything from the 2gb hd in my powercenter pro in the days before mp3 hahahahahahahahaha man that sucked.)

any way before i start sounding like an even older fart than i am, i should forget the past and see how i can get this mic sounding better. or maybe i jsut need a beter mic.

it's a condenser mic, and it's powered, but the signal is sooooo thin. oh well, i'll just take it back and try another one.

i listened to the podcast at work, but it seemed to me to have a pretty slow download. maybe my isp throttles the line, i don't know. hopefuly i'll get some traffic and i'll find out for sure.

i bought the domain names and marked their DNS entries to point to my CQHost account and put up a php script that performs the redirect away from the digital bridgeway web site, which needs a total reworking. i think what i'm going to have to do is push the digital bridgeway account into a subdirectory and promote groggyjava to the root. i think that will be easier for linking back and forth between flickr, blogger, etc. i have no idea if i'm going to get any traffic or not on this site. digital bridgeway hardly gets any.

dude, i better hit the sack it's 1:30 in the morning. talk to ya later.
March 29, 2005

News in brief

played party poker for a half hour this morning, won about $12, kinda boring

cat played her account up over $500 last -- she's funny she played till 3 am

finished the survey for lunch box. nice to work with php again, it was seriously rudimentary, not even a database, more like a guestbook-type app, but for the size of their audience, it should work just fine.

i was up till 3 am building the survey for these people who were all freaked out about having it done by 9am today and they haven't even looked at it. typical.

josh and tom are both looking for work, tom's looking to move to portland, josh is heading to nyc. josh got laid off and is loving it, tom is still working and hates. i helped them both with their resumes and neither has gotten much response yet. i must suck! ahahahahahahahaha!

marc's gone solo and now i really don't hear much from him. he likes being busy. i'm happy for him. i know he was feeling unsatisfied and his last job.

i still have to finish my squirrel hunter videos. i have 3 more episodes to go. i need to either shit or get off the pot.

i'm dying to get my office finished. i've decided to use hanging shelves instead of building them.

first i gotta get the electric working up there.

oh yeah, lunch time people!
i'm eating a big ol' ham sandwich from downstairs at the cheesy deli YUM
kinda stupid since i have a huge pile of leftover easter ham at the house.

tonight i'm heading over to my brother-in-law's house to help him get ready for the drywaller to come in and finish up his basement. i've been trying to help out as much as i can, which usually works out to as much as i can remember when he's working.

cool links for today
http://www.sofake.com/
article about my dad's company
funny funny link
http://jesusoftheweek.com/ (thanks josh)

it's about 4:30 and i am at a good breaking point here at gigamoto, i want to bail, but steve hinted that i should be working a full 4 hours -- i've been averaging 35.

i think i'll go kill myself. er, have a cigarette, i mean, yeah...

conshy's fire dept was heading out while i was out there -- freakin LOUD
<br
